Check mobile parity at the template level

Select examples from each important template: the homepage, a service page, an article and a product if the site sells online. Compare the substantive information available on mobile and desktop. Rearranging content is different from removing it. Check titles, headings, internal links and image descriptions as well as the visible copy.

Test components that reveal information dynamically. Important content should not depend on an interaction that a crawler may never perform. Make navigation usable with touch and keyboard input, and keep links connected to real destinations. Review any mobile-only redirects or alternative URLs carefully so visitors and crawlers reach equivalent content rather than an unrelated homepage.

Check discovery, indexing and content separately

A technical review should follow a sequence. First check that the intended URL is reachable and returns an appropriate response. Then inspect whether links and the sitemap make it discoverable, whether robots directives permit the intended crawling and indexing, and whether the canonical points to the correct page. These controls have different jobs, so changing all of them at once can make a problem harder to diagnose.

Inspect representative pages as a crawler receives them. Important text, links and image descriptions should be available reliably; a page that contains only a loading shell needs additional investigation. Review redirects for unnecessary chains, verify that missing pages return an actual not-found response and remove broken internal links. Structured data should describe visible, accurate content rather than promises that the page does not support.

Keep a record of the issue, affected URLs, evidence and proposed repair. Prioritize site-wide access problems above cosmetic metadata improvements. After release, request or observe a fresh inspection and monitor the relevant reports. Discovery, indexing and ranking are separate stages: submitting a sitemap is useful housekeeping, but it does not guarantee that every page will be indexed or appear for a particular search.

Make the experience usable beyond one screen

A responsive layout is only the starting point. People also browse with enlarged text, a keyboard, a screen reader, reduced motion preferences and slower connections. Begin with semantic headings and real buttons or links for interactive controls. Every form field needs a persistent label. An error message should identify the problem and explain how to fix it without relying only on a red border or a temporary notification.

Review contrast, focus visibility and reading order on the actual finished pages. Test long service names, large prices and realistic product titles rather than short placeholder text. At increased zoom, content should remain readable without controls overlapping. Images that communicate information need useful alternative text; purely decorative images should not introduce extra announcements. Movement should support a task, and essential information should not depend on watching an animation.

Automated checks can identify some missing labels and contrast problems, but they cannot decide whether a booking process makes sense. Try the main journey with a keyboard and check it on a small phone. Document issues by their effect on the visitor: an inaccessible submit button is a higher priority than a minor spacing inconsistency. Include these checks in future content updates so that accessibility does not gradually disappear after launch.

Diagnose performance before adding another optimization tool

Begin with the pages that matter commercially: the main entry page, a representative service or product page, and the conversion journey. Record the device, network conditions and whether the visit uses an empty or populated cache. A single desktop score cannot describe every visitor's experience. Compare the page before and after a change under similar conditions, and examine actual loading behaviour alongside the summary score.

Common causes include oversized hero images, unnecessary third-party scripts, slow server responses and expensive interactive components. Identify the cause before choosing the remedy. Compressing an image will not fix a delayed database query; a faster server will not eliminate a blocking marketing script. Prioritize work by the number of visitors affected and the business importance of the page, rather than chasing small score changes with uncertain practical value.

Optimization must preserve functionality. Retest menus, forms, consent controls, search and checkout after changing caching, script loading or asset compression. Keep a record of the original setting and an easy rollback. Monitor again after adding a campaign tag or installing an extension, because performance is a property of the whole page. The goal is a dependable experience that supports customer tasks, not a test result achieved by removing features visitors actually need.

Organize navigation around customer tasks

Useful navigation describes destinations in the customer's language. Labels such as Services, Pricing, Delivery and Contact usually communicate more than clever slogans. A large menu is not automatically comprehensive: when every page has equal prominence, visitors have to do the prioritization themselves. Put the most common tasks first and move supporting information into relevant sections or the footer. Give each important service a stable address that can be linked from related articles and proposals.

Test the structure with real tasks. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to find a particular service, understand its scope and locate the next step without prompting. Note where they hesitate, especially on a phone. A menu that works with a mouse can fail when a submenu depends on hovering, a close button is too small or keyboard focus disappears behind an overlay. Check the order of links and the visibility of the current page as well as visual appearance.

Internal links should help the reader continue a decision, rather than repeat the same sales phrase throughout the page. Link an explanation of website maintenance to the support service, or a buying guide to the relevant category. Use descriptive link text, remove broken destinations and retain valuable existing addresses during redesigns. Navigation is a system that needs to remain understandable as the site grows.

Measure outcomes with enough context to make a decision

Define the question before choosing the dashboard. A lead-generation site needs to distinguish qualified enquiries from spam, job applications and duplicate contacts. A shop needs to separate completed orders from abandoned checkouts and refunded purchases. Agree on these definitions with the people who process the results. Otherwise different teams can report apparently conflicting numbers while using different meanings of success.

Document important events, their triggers and where the data goes. Check that one completed action creates one event, including when a visitor reloads a confirmation page or returns from a payment provider. Keep personal information out of analytics events and URLs. Review mobile and desktop journeys separately when their behaviour differs, and label internal tests so they do not inflate results.

Use trends and business context rather than reacting to every short-term movement. A seasonal offer, a change in advertising spend or a broken form can all change conversion numbers. Note these events alongside the report. When testing an improvement, decide in advance what would justify keeping it and allow enough relevant activity to form a useful view. If traffic is limited, direct customer feedback and usability observations may explain the problem faster than an elaborate experiment.
